STEP Talks!

Date: November 28, 14h30 (Portugal)

Summary: Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds great potential to promote equality and inclusion but can also deepen existing inequalities if not properly managed. On the one hand, AI can enhance accessibility by providing assistive technologies for people with disabilities, improving healthcare access through personalized diagnostics, and helping detect biases in hiring and justice systems. However, AI can also perpetuate discrimination if trained on biased data, exclude marginalized groups through the digital divide, and contribute to surveillance and job displacement that disproportionately affects vulnerable communities.

Speaker: Pedro João Soares Rodrigues completed his PhD in Industrial Electronics in 2008 at the University of Minho. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Braganca, has published several articles/chapters in international journals and books, and is the co-author of one patent. Pedro has received three awards in machine learning subjects. His research interests are in the field of artificial intelligence.
